Growing

The basic starting point for all gardens and gardeners is knowing how to grow and look after your own plants successfully. Gardening is a skill that is learnt over many years, but some of the essential elements can be established quite quickly. The following brief guide will help you to gain an understanding of general plant growing techniques, covering sections like seeds, seedlings, plants, cuttings and related subjects.

Hardwood Cuttings - Conifers?

Conifers can be struck from hardwood cuttings, although they may take several months to form roots.

Hardwood conifer cuttings will have foliage, and they have a tendency tend to dry out and die when exposed to direct sun and wind. It is better to start them off using a cold frame or by enclosing the propagating area in plastic tent, preferably in the shade.

See our brief guide on Growing - Hardwood Cuttings for details of standard cutting taking procedures.

Suitable materials and growing compounds can be found at your local garden centre.
