Growing
The basic starting point for all gardens and gardeners is knowing how to grow and look after your own plants successfully. Gardening is a skill that is learnt over many years, but some of the essential elements can be established quite quickly. The following brief guide will help you to gain an understanding of general plant growing techniques, covering sections like seeds, seedlings, plants, cuttings and related subjects.
Hardwood Cuttings - Forsythias?
Forsythias are an excellent plant to take hardwood cuttings from. Although you should remember that the fibrous pith may dry up or rot before the cutting strikes. This should be avoided it you want to ensure a successful result.
To get round this problem cut immediately below a node where the stem is at its hardest and seal the bottom of the cutting with pruning paste or wax (available from your local suppliers).
Wound the sides of the stem to expose some of the cambium layer (the lighter green portion just under the bark), and then insert it in the cutting mix.
Monitor the cuttings and look for signs of healthy growth activity.
